Apples are also full of B vitamins – essential for your nervous system and blood cells. Furthermore, all kinds of minerals are found in apples such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.

But here is the real reason why an apple a day will help you lose weight.

The crunchy fruit contains plenty of fiber as well as molecules called polyphenols. These non-digestible substances are fermented by bacteria in our gut resulting in the production of butyric acid. The latter promotes a healthy gut environment and the further growth of friendly gut bacteria.

Now, you probably don’t think of bacteria as your friend in fighting diseases.

However, doctors warn that an imbalance of the “bugs” living in our gut causes chronic inflammation which leads to malabsorption of essential nutrients and eventually to diabetes and obesity.

It is therefore important for us to promote friendly bacterial growth in the gut. The ones that help us absorb nutrients and keep us healthy.

What type of bacteria live in the gut is determined largely by what types of foods we eat. Fibers and polyphenols found in apples are exactly the type of food we should be eating to promote a healthy gut and weight loss.
